Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) was an inspiration to Impressionist artists, Picasso, cartoonists, and artists today, including myself. His 15 awesome sketchbooks, that he called Manga, are available in the book, Hokusai Manga. These sketchbooks were filled with studies of animals, people, nature, and are still a model for facial and body expressions and emotions.
The New York Public Library also has an awesome digital collection that you can view.
